Despite continued opposition Brazil's Institute of the Environment (IBAMA) has given the go ahead for the installation of the preliminary infrastructure for the construction of the massive Belo Monte hydroelectric dam in the Amazon jungle.

Areva T&D has been awarded, in partnership with China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), a contract to supply High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems for projects interconnecting the Ningdong and Shangdong regions and the Three Gorges Dam to Shanghai.

Areva's Transmission and Distribution (T&D) division has signed a contract worth around €60m ($77.5m) to supply H400 High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) thyristor valves for two major HVDC links to be built between Ningdong and Shangdong and the Three Gorges Dam and Shanghai.
