POWER-GEN International wraps up in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Dec. 15, 2003 — POWER-GEN International conference & exhibition has officially ended in Las Vegas, Nevada, with an attendance of more than 16,000 people, according to the show staff.

POWER-GEN International (PGI) is the largest power event in the world. PennWell’s Power Engineering magazine is the official sponsoring publication of the event.

Other sponsoring associations included:

– American Boiler Manufacturers Association (ABMA)

– American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE)

– American Wind Energy Association (AWEA)

– Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA )

– Gulf Coast Power Association (GCPA)

– National Hydrogen Association (NHA)

– Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA)

– Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC)

– Turbine Inlet Cooling Association (TICA)

Part of the event began Sunday and Monday with two discussion groups and several Competitive Power College courses. Technical tours on Monday took industry members to see APEX Generating Station & Silverhawk Power Project and Black Hills Energy’s Las Vegas Cogen complex. A golf tournament held Monday provided an opportunity for relaxation at the Angel Park Golf Club.

Tuesday morning, Power Engineering Managing Editor Brian Schimmoller opened the Keynote session, introducing three major industry members to speak about the current state of the electric industry: Walter M. Higgins III, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of Sierra Pacific Resources; David M. Walker, Senior Vice President of Bechtel Power Corp.; and Joseph A. Stanislaw, President and CEO of Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA).

In the aftermath of the August 14 blackout, and the political wrangling to determine the best course of action for addressing energy issues encompassing generation, transmission, distribution and end-use consumption, the keynote session contained a unique set of perspectives.

Also Tuesday morning, Schimmoller presented the Projects-of-the-Year Awards. Power Engineering editors selected projects in the U.K., U.S. and the Philippines to receive the awards. The award winners were published in the Wednesday issue of the show daily, POWER-GEN TODAY. (The show daily was handed out in the exhibition hall each morning; it was also available for download as a PDF file on http://www.power-gen.com.)

The exhibit hall opened after the keynote, about 11:30 a.m., and technical conference sessions begin after a lunch break.

Industrial Water Conference, another PennWell event which is co-locating with PGI, had its opening session Tuesday afternoon as well.

Power Engineering hosted a floor reception in the exhibit hall from 4 to 6 p.m.

Thursday, PGI hosted six Mega-Sessions, which are discussions featuring the hottest topics in the power industry, including New Market Entrants, Global Climate Change, Large Frame Gas Turbine, Wind Energy: A Commercial Reality, Navigating the Distributed Generation Market, and Why Solid Fuel Combustion Technologies?

Also Thursday, a Chevrolet Corvette was given away by random drawing. The drawing was open to all conference delegates who completed a passport.

Much more information is available in each day’s issue of the POWER-GEN TODAY newspaper. To read the issues, visit http://www.power-gen.com.

These issues will be available for online reading through Jan. 11, 2004.
