FM Generator acquires bankrupt firm in Massachusetts

Massachusetts-based on-site power service firm FM Generator has acquired nearby Foxboro-based Barros Companies out of bankruptcy court.

The acquisition will add nearly 1,400 former Barros residential customers to FM’s existing client base in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. FM also assumed nearly $500,000 in pre-paid Barros service contracts.

The company provides preventative maintenance and repair services on generators and transfer switches. Barros filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in U.S. bankruptcy court earlier this year.

“These customers would have essentially had no recourse for securing the maintenance services they paid for in advance, which is pretty unsettling with winter around the corner,” FM Generator owner Michael Molway said. “We’re glad to be able to provide the services necessary to keep their equipment functioning properly.”

Through the purchase, FM becomes an authorized residential and commercial dealer for Generac, the nation’s biggest manufacturer of home backup generators. The company already is a dealer of Briggs & Stratton generators and motors.

New England is a key market for backup generators, given storm issues. Recently, a “bomb cyclone” storm knocked out power to more than 500,000 homes and businesses throughout the region.
