Global energy services firm Wood will provide technical safety advice and support for the United Kingdom’s Office of Nuclear Regulation.

Under the four-year framework Scottish-based Wood will work with the ONR in new builds, power generation, decommissioning and defense. Wood has worked with the UK nuclear regulator for more than 20 years.

“We are proud to support the ONR in its mission to ensure that the UK’s nuclear regulation is as robust as any in the world,” Bob MacDonald, CEO of Wood Specialist Technical Solutions, said in a statement. “This contract win recognizes that the independent review and assurance provided by Wood’s experts has an important role to play in the regulatory process.”

The company also will be a supplier under the deal with the UK ONR. Those supplier agreements cover specialist engineering, technical services, control and instrumentation, safety analysis, fuel design, reactor chemistry, radiation protection and radioactive waste management and decommissioning, among other things.

Earlier this year, Wood won the contract as sole supplier of inspection qualification services for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station currently under construction. EDF Energy, the station developer, has commissioned Wood’s Inspection Validation Centre (IVC) to qualify ultrasonic inspections on high-integrity welds in primary circuit components for two 1.6 GW reactors.

The $25 billion Hinkley Point C is a planned 3,200-MW station expected to be completed by 2025, according to EDF.
