The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff completed its final safety evaluation report for two proposed reactors at the Levy County site in Florida.
The report concludes there are no safety aspects that would preclude issuing the license for the construction and operation of the reactors at the site. Duke Energy said in 2013 it had shelved plans to build a nuclear plant in Levy County and would instead focus on natural gas plant developments.
The NRC staff will provide the report and the final environmental impact statement to the Commission for the mandatory hearing phase of the licensing process, expected to take place later this year.
Progress Energy Florida, now Duke Energy Florida, submitted its COL application on July 30, 2008, for permission to build and operate two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. The NRC’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards independently reviewed those aspects of the application that concern safety and provided the results of its review to the Commission on Dec. 7, 2011. The results of its review of several exemption requests were provided on April 18, 2016. The environmental review was issued in April 2012.
