SVAFO, a company owned by four Swedish nuclear plant operators, awarded a contract to Areva to dismantle research nuclear reactors in Sweden.

The R2-0 and R2 research reactors, with a capacity of 1- and 50-MW, respectively, ended operations in 2005 after 45 years of service. Areva’s scope of work includes preparing a detailed project schedule and to disassemble the two reactors. Areva will also measure the radiation level of the components and package them in appropriate storage casks before returning them to the customer. Work on site is expected to begin in the first half of 2015.

SVAFO is owned by Forsmarks Kraftgrupp AB, Ringhals AB, Barsebäck Kraft AB and OKG AB.
