Plant Hatch 1 Nuclear Unit Begins Refueling, Upgrades

A planned refueling and upgrades outage is underway at Unit 1 of Plant Hatch in Alabama.
Plant operator Southern Nuclear (NYSE: SO) took the unit offline Feb. 8 for refueling, maintenance and regular testing activities. In addition, workers will make upgrades to plant systems and components. The last refueling outage for Unit 1 was completed in spring 2014. Each unit requires new fuel every 24 months.
Employees across the Southern Nuclear fleet are assisting the Plant Hatch staff of more than 900 in the refueling. More than 800 additional workers from General Electric (NYSE: GE), Day and Zimmermann and other partners are performing specialized  tasks. Plant Hatch 2 is expected to continue operations while Unit 1 is offline.
