Fan Drive Replacement Boasts 2 Year ROI
To optimize control of a 1,000 hp motor running an eight ft. diameter booster fan at its power plant, the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana chose ABB`s ACS 1000 medium-voltage AC drive. The new drive will operate the fan`s 10-year-old AC motor at 4.16 kV. It was previously controlled with inlet vanes.
The fan, which is being fitted with a new rotor as part of a plant retrofit project, is on the downstream side of the induced draft fan and boosts pressure of the plant`s flue gas into the wet scrubber.
Energy savings from the drive retrofit is expected to provide a full return on investment, including installation costs, in less than two years.
