U.S. uranium concentrate production in 2013 is up 21 percent since 2011 as production ramped up to offset the now-ended Megatons to Megawatts program.

Production in 2013 totaled 4.8 million pounds from seven uranium concentrate processing facilities, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

In 2012, 83 percent of uranium that fueled U.S. nuclear power plants came from foreign sources. At the end of 2012, U.S. uranium inventories owned by nuclear power plants totaled 97 million pounds, or almost two years’ worth of uranium, EIA said. Owners and operators of U.S. nuclear plants expect to need 48 million pounds of uranium in 2014.
