Duke receives air permit for coal gasification power plant

28 January 2008 — The Indiana Department of Environmental Management approved the air permit for a 630 MW coal gasification power plant planned at Duke Energy’s Edwardsport Station in southwest Indiana.

The plant will use integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology, utilizing two combustion turbines and a steam turbine to produce electricity.

The plant will cost around $2 billion to construct and is due to be completed by 2012. The new plant will replace four older units that produced approximately 160 MW. Major construction on the new IGCC plant is expected to begin this spring.
