Steel welded fintubes are used to reduce the size and cost of heat exchangers and in power boilers such as heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), and are a fundamental element of their design. Competing companies look for advantages by offering different tube sizes and fin pitches, with solid or serrated fin surfaces.
The heating plant at the University of Alberta has installed low NOx burners on its two newest boilers to ensure compliance with Canada?s strict air pollution regulations. The plant supplies heating steam, de-mineralized water, compressed air and some electricity to a campus population of approximately 45,000 people.
Southern California Edison?s Huntington Beach generating station recently underwent two sets of dye dilution flow studies on its Unit 2 circulating water pumps. Testing was conducted by Dye Flow Technologies. The first tests evaluated the full-flow performance of the two pumps and identified deficiencies requiring maintenance (see graph). Results revealed flow rates substantially below the manufacturer?s flow curve when graphed with the head generated during the test.
ABB Power Generation?s GT24 and GT26 advanced gas turbines produced single-digit NOx emissions during combustion testing. These are the first two models of ABB?s advanced gas turbine family to utilize a sequential combustion system consisting of two annular combustors, an EV and an SEV. These test results dispel an industry myth that high thermal efficiency is incompatible with low emissions.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, which brought 1,240 mile-per-hour winds into southern Florida, 1.4 million Florida Power & Light Co. (FPL) customers were without electricity. Not only were the lines down, but many generating plants also suffered damage, including Turkey Point nuclear power plant. The hurricane wiped out a 100,000 gallon elevated water tower, a 500,000 gallon water storage tank, city water supply piping, three service water pumps, four raw water pumps and a fire water pump.
Remote condition monitoring has saved more than $650,000 in downtime, personnel time and materials during the first 18 months of operation for Lone Star Energy Corp.`s Encogen Four power plant in Buffalo, N.Y. Cost to the plant for hardware, fees and training associated with the monitoring system was $35,000.
In 1993, it was necessary to replace the original 12-inch pipes providing water to the Smith Mountain hydro plant near Roanoke, Va. The piping, installed in the early 1960s, had developed leaks and other problems.
New York State Electric and Gas Corp. recently installed a large-scale flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system at its Milliken Station in Lansing, N.Y. The system, which includes twin fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) flues suspended in a steel chimney, removes sulfur dioxide from the flue gas, turning it into gypsum for the coal-fired generating plant. International Chimney Corp., Williamsville, N.Y., was contracted to design and install the outer shell of the steel chimney, which is 40 feet in diam
