Gas- and diesel-fired Canal 3 station completed at Cape Cod

Work is completed for the unique dual-fueled Canal 3 Generation Station on Cape Cod.

The Canal 3 (pictured) was a joint engineering and construction venture of Burns & McDonnell and Skanska USA Civil. They started construction in 2017, with commercial operation of the 350-MW facility beginning this summer.

The simple-cycle Canal 3 serves as a peaking unit to provide generation capacity to the ISO-New England grid. Canal 3 is located on Cape Cod in the town of Sandwich, Massachusetts, on a 12-acre site adjacent to an existing, affiliated two-unit power generation facility.

The project achieved significant cost efficiencies by utilizing existing transmission interconnections, a natural gas pipeline and fuel storage tanks, according to the release by Kansas City, Mo.-based Burns & McDonnell. The plant features the first GE 7HA.02 gas turbine operating in simple-cycle mode to be fitted with hot selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment.

“Canal 3 is a great example of how new advanced-class gas turbine technology can provide very economical grid support with industry-leading fast start capability to reach full load in under 10 minutes,” says Rick Halil, president of the Energy Group at Burns & McDonnell. “This was a great project thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team and client support that went above and beyond every step of the way.”

An affiliate of NRG Energy, Inc. provided project management services for Canal 3’s owner. The project was acquired by Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners in 2018.

The new dual-fuel power facility utilizes natural gas as its primary fuel source but can switch to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel if needed.

Burns & McDonnell and NRG Energy both will be presenters in separate content sessions during POWERGEN International, happening Nov. 19-21 in New Orleans. NRG will detail its restarting of a dormant gas-fired plant in Texas, while Burns & McDonnell experts will speak in a variety of sessions.

POWERGEN also has more than 30 representatives from power utilities speaking on sessions. Registration is open and a power generator discount is available.
