A natural gas line explosion in downtown Durham, North Carolina killed one person and injured at least 17 others Wednesday morning.

A Dominion Energy employee was one of those injured, according to news reports. A nearby school also was evaluated.

PSNC Energy crews responded to the accident in which a contractor hit the line during work, according to reports. The company said it was working with local emergency response and county officials, according to a Dominion Energy press release.

“Dominion Energy’s thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this tragic event as well as their families. We are continuing to work with emergency officials on scene and updates will be issued when more information is available,” the statement reads.

PSNC is a natural gas utility owned by Dominion. It was part of SCANA Corp., which was acquired by Dominion for nearly $15 billion last year.
