Ansaldo to deliver gas turbine expertise to China

Italy’s Ansaldo Energia and China United Gas Turbine Company (UGTC) are to collaborate on developing heavy duty gas turbines.

UGTC is owned by State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), which is already working on developing China’s first indigenous generation of heavy-duty gas turbines.

Ansaldo Energia will now support UGTC’s heavy-duty gas turbine programme with technical experience in design, engineering and testing.

Earlier this month, Edison and Ansaldo Energia signed a €300m contract for a new combined gas cycle plant in Italy that Ansaldo said would make it “the most efficient in Europe”.

The Marghera Levante plant will get a new power island made up mainly of Ansaldo’s GT36 gas turbine which will give it a total capacity of 780 MW and an energy performance of 63 per cent.

“This translates into a 40 per cent reduction of specific carbon emissions compared to the average of the current Italian thermoelectric park and a reduction of emissions of nitrogen oxides by more than 70 per cent,” said Ansaldo in a statement.

Marc Benayoun, Edison’s chief executive, said: “We want to have a leadership role in Italy’s energy transition.”
