Mitsubishi Offshoot Converting Japanese Plant from Oil to Biomass Fuel

Mitsubishi Corp. Power Ltd has begun work on a new biomass power generation plant in western Japan.

The subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp. established a joint venture with Kansai Electric Power Co. to create Aioi Bioenergy Corp. Aioi has gained loan approval and is beginning design and procurement process for the plant.

The project will take over Unit 2 of the Aioi Power Station located in Hyogo. The 375-MW station is being converted from heavy or crude oil to using woody biomass as the fuel source.

Unit 2 has been offline since April 1. Operations as a biomass power generation facility are scheduled to begin in January 2023.

The biomass power generation plant will be fueled using natural wood pellets. This will not only contribute to controlling carbon dioxide emissions but will also allow the facility to operate as a base load plant.
