Hydrogen Leak Detected at Cooper Nuclear

By Editors of Power Engineering

The Nebraska Public Power District declared a “notification of unusual event” Tuesday due to a hydrogen leak at Cooper Nuclear Station.

A maintenance crew discovered the leak into a main plant area while working on a non-nuclear system, and NPPD said the leak was repaired the same day.

The plant continues to operate normally, and there was no safety threat. NPPD has notified the NRC.

The NRC conducted a special inspection at Cooper earlier this year after two valves closed during a scheduled refueling outage were not reopened when the plant returned to operations.
