MidAmerican Energy announced plans to spend $1 billion to repower 706 wind turbines across seven wind facilities in Iowa with longer blades, hubs and more efficient nacelles, the Des Moines Register reported.
The process, which is now under way, will allow each turbine to generate between 19 and 28 percent more energy.
MidAmerican also plans to construct 1,000 new wind turbines across the state, adding to its current total of 2,020.
Both the new construction and the repowering are set for completion by 2020.
