AES Alamitos, a subsidiary of the AES Corporation, has begun construction the 640-MW gas-fired Alamitos Energy Center.

The plant, which will include a 100 MW battery energy storage system, will replace the existing AES Alamitos Generating Station in Long Beach, California.

We’re excited to move forward to the construction phase of this important project and look forward to working with the community every step of the way,” said Stephen O’Kane, president of AES Alamitos Energy LLC.

The new Alamitos plant will be half the size of the existing plant, eliminate the use of ocean water for cooling, reduce fresh water use by 70 percent and incorporate emission control technology.

AES had originally planned the new Alamitos with a capacity of 1,040 MW and a 300-MW battery storage system.
