Apple announced it has signed power purchase agreements with one wind and one solar project, both currently under development in Oregon.
The company plans to purchase 200 MW from the Montague Wind Power Project, which will begin operations in Gilliam County by the end of 2018, and 56 MW from Solar Star Oregon II, which comes online in Crook County at the end of this year.
Additionally, Apple will purchase power from a 50-MW portfolio of six solar arrays operated by Cypress Creek Renewables, and from two hydro projects Apple did not identify.
All the purchases, outlined in the company’s latest Environmental Responsibility Report, will support Apple’s Prineville data center.
Apple noted the company will use Oregon’s Direct Access program to schedule the renewable energy from the various projects directly to the data center.
Apple’s goal is to purchase more than 4 GW of renewable power by 2020, including 2 GW in China. The company boosted its use of renewable energy for its facilities from 16 percent in 2010 to 96 percent in 2016.
