GE, Southern California Edison Reveal World’s First Battery-Gas Turbine Hybrid

GE and Southern California Edison revealed the world’s first battery-gas turbine hybrid system deployed in Norwalk, California.

The LM6000 Hybrid Electric Gas Turbine system combines a 10 MW battery energy storage system providing power with a 50 MW LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine.

The system unveiled Monday is the first of two GE plans to deliver to SCE, and will help balance variable energy supply and demand as solar production fluctuates and electricity usage surges during peak hours.

GE’s Hybrid EGT includes a control system that seamlessly blends output between the battery and the gas turbine, with the battery designed to provide enough time to allow the gas turbine to start and reach a specific power output. This control eliminates the need for fuel and water consumption in stand-by mode.

“As the electrical grid network continues to evolve, with more intermittent renewables being added every day, products like the Hybrid EGT can help smooth out the delivery of electricity,” said Reinaldo Garcia, President and CEO of Grid Solutions from GE Energy Connections. “Storage and the ability to quickly push power to the grid also play a key role in emergency situations, dispatching energy immediately to the grid ensuring that we are able help keep the lights on for everyone.”
