Owensboro Municipal Utilities announced the coal-fired Elmer Smith Power Plant will shut down entirely by 2023, the Associated Press reported.
The company originally announced the first unit would shut down between 2019 and 2021. Together, the two units generate 425 MW.
A representative of the plant said the decision was due to the age of the plant, environmental compliance and low natural gas prices. The company is considering a number of options to replace the capacity.
