Entergy May Abandon 226-MW Gas Plant Development in Louisiana

Entergy asked the New Orleans city council to delay consideration of its proposal for a 226-MW gas plant by two weeks, and may abandon the development entirely.

Entergy officials said the extra time is needed to determine if the plant is still necessary given lowered projections for future energy use, the New Orleans Advocate reported.

The company now predicts electricity use for the area will fall by 3.5 percent over the next 20 years.

The proposed plant would be constructed on the site of the shuttered Michoud natural gas facility. The development attracted criticism from various local groups that argued the money would be better used for energy efficiency programs and alternative power sources.
