Thanks to the continued growth of wind generation, 13 states now generate at least 10 percent of their electricity from wind turbines.
Iowa reached the highest amount of wind in a statewide energy mix by far, with 36.3 percent of its electrical capacity coming from wind, according to a new report from the American Wind Energy Association. Kansas also reached precisely 30 percent.
Oklahoma, North Dakota and South Dakota all topped 20 percent wind generation. Though Texas ranked lower on the list at 12.7 percent wind, the AWEA noted the state produces more electricity than the United Kingdom.
Wind capacity surpassed hydroelectric capacity for the first time in 2016.
