Fire, Explosion Shuts Down Delta Energy Center

By Editors of Power Engineering

A fire and explosion has knocked out a steam turbine generator at Calpine’s Delta Energy Center in Pittsburg, California.

The fire involved the steam generator’s hydrogen cooling system rather than the steam turbine itself, though the explosion destroyed one end of the generator, the East Bay Times reported.

However, no oils or emissions leaked during the incident.

Calpine is still assessing the incident and has not indicated when the 880-MW combined-cycle plant would return into service. The California Independent System Operator indicated the outage would not impact the overall grid.

Delta Energy Center came online in 2002.
