NEC Energy Solutions to Install Largest Battery Grid in New England

NEC Energy Solutions announced they will supply the Sterling Municipal Light Department of Sterling, Massachusetts with a 2-2MW, 3.9MWh GSS grid storage energy solution.

When finished in December, it will be the largest battery-based energy storage system installed in New England and the first utility-scale project in the state.

The project is part of SMLD’s effort to reduce carbon emissions, which includes installing large amounts of photovoltaic solar. A press release noted the utility chose an energy storage system to provide greater resiliency of their grid.

Funding for the development came from a $1.46 million grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources with additional financial and technical assistance from the U.S. Department of Energy.

“Energy storage technologies, especially when paired with renewable energy, have the potential to be a game changer for Massachusetts, helping to lower the cost of energy to ratepayers while reducing emissions.” said Judith Judson, commissioner with the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources Commissioner.
