Talen Energy Withdraws Bell Bend Nuclear License Application

Talen Energy is withdrawing its license application for a proposed nuclear power project in Pennsylvania.

Talen Energy sent a written request to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to withdraw the application for the Bell Bend project. Licensing and permitting activities had previously been suspended, but the license application had remained on file. The filing of the withdrawal effectively ends the project. The application was filed in October 2008 for a site adjacent to the existing Susquehanna nuclear power plant.

The company said it sees “no viable path” to obtaining a license for the project. Areva was contracted to supply the reactor design for Bell Bend, but Areva asked the NRC in February 2015 to suspend the design certification process.
