Big Sandy Natural Gas Conversion Project Completed

Kentucky Power, a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), completed the natural gas conversion project at the Big Sandy Power Plant in Kentucky.

Unit 1 opened at the plant in 1963 and operated until Nov. 13, 2015. The conversion from burning coal to natural gas started soon after. Major construction finished by mid-May 2016. On May 30, the unit went online and began supplying up to 268 MW of gas-generated electricity to PJM Interconnection.

Kentucky Power plans to remove Unit 2 and redevelop a portion of the site into an industrial park.
