Nuclear License Transfer Approved for Shut Down Reactor

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the license transfer for the 50-MW La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor from the Dairyland Power Cooperative to LaCrosseSolutions LLC.

The plant, located in Wisconsin at the site of the Genoa coal-fired power plant, has been shut down since 1987 after 20 years of operation. At that time, the NRC modified the original operating license to a possession-only license for the purpose of storage of nuclear materials and waste and decommissioning activities.

On Oct. 8, 2015, Dairyland submitted an application to the NRC requesting transfer of the license to LaCrosseSolutions, a subsidiary of EnergySolutions LLC. The license transfer would allow LaCrosseSolutions to expedite decommissioning activities on the site.

EnergySolutions entered into a similar arrangement to decommission the shuttered Zion nuclear plant in Illinois.
