FPL Commissions Newest Natural Gas-Fired Power Plant

FPL commissions Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center

Florida Power & Light Co. (FPL) commissioned its natural gas-fired Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center, the third in a series of such facilities.

The Port Everglades plant replaces a 1960s-era, oil-fired power plant that was demolished in mid-2013. The plant entered service two months early and is under budget, and is expected to provide FPL customers with $400 million during the 30-year life of the facility. It is the third of similar plants, following commissioning of the Riviera Beach and Cape Canaveral Next Generation Clean Energy Centers.

FPL invested approximately $1.2 billion to build the Port Everglades plant, which officially bean commercial operation on April 1.
