Byron Nuclear Plant License Renewals Approved

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) renewed the operating licenses of the Byron 1 and 2 nuclear power plant in Illinois.

The dual-unit Byron Station has two pressurized water reactors that have been approved to operate another 20 years. Unit 1 can operate through Oct. 31, 2044 and Unit 2 through Nov. 6, 2046. Exelon applied for the license renewals on May 29, 2013. The NRC staff issued the final safety report July 6, 2015 and issued the supplemental environmental impact statement nine days later.

The Byron license renewals brings to 80 the number of commercial nuclear reactors with renewed licenses. An additional 14 renewal applications are currently under review.
