The operating licenses of two nuclear reactors in Tennessee were renewed for an additional 20 years.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved the license renewals for units 1 and 2 of the Sequoyah nuclear power plant. Unit 1 can now operate through Sept. 17, 2040, and Unit 2 can operate through Sept. 15, 2041. Plant operator Tennessee Valley Authority applied for the renewals on Jan. 7, 2013. A safety evaluation report was issued in January 2015 supplemented earlier this month. A supplemental environmental impact statement was issued in March.
The Sequoyah license renewals brings to 78 the number of commercial nuclear reactors with renewed licenses. Applications for an additional 16 are under review.
