EDF: Hinkley Point C Nuclear Plant Start Date Delayed

Hinkley Point C nuclear project

France-owned EDF Energy says that the Hinkley Point C nuclear power project will not begin in 2023 as planned.

The power company said it would revise the construction timeline once it finalizes investments, according to the BBC. EDF planned for two Chinese companies to invest in the project, but costs have increased amid delays and investigations into an incentive scheme to finance the project.

Construction work at the site stopped in August after regulators say contractor Nuclear New Build GenCo informed them that they were halting work and that the site entered a state of Care and Maintenance in July. The UK Office for Nuclear Regulation said it ended safety inspections at the site but will continue regulatory services until the project is ready to remobilize.

EDF plans to install two European Pressurized Reactors at Hinkley Point, but the delivery date of the reactors has been pushed back until late 2018, the article said.
