ENEC files for nuclear power plant operating licenses

UAE nuclear support TNS study

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp. (ENEC) filed the operating license application for two nuclear reactors currently under construction.
The application was filed for Barakah units 1 and 2 with the United Arab Emirates’ Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). The submission follows a five-year-long process during which ENEC and main contractor Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) documented the safety of the planned operations and maintenance of the plant in a 15,000-page report.
ENEC hopes to receive its 60-year operating license for Unit 1 in 2016 in time to begin operations in 2017. Approval for Unit 2’s license is expected to follow in 2017. ENEC said Unit 1 is now more than 69 percent complete. The other three units will come online at 12-month intervals, with Unit 4 set for operations in 2020, pending regulatory approvals. The four APR-1400 units will generate a combined capacity of 5,600 MW, or 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs.
