Panda Power to develop third combined-cycle power plant in Pa.

EIA says gas generation could nearly catch up with coal this season

Panda Power Funds signed a joint venture agreement with Sunbury Generation LP to develop, finance, construct and operate a 1,000-MW natural gas-fired power plant in Pennsylvania.

The Hummel Station is expected to be one of the largest coal-to-gas conversions in the U.S. The plant will be located on the site of the recently retired Sunbury coal-fired power plant and is expected to begin commercial operations in the second half of 2017. A subsidiary of UGI Energy Services began the permitting process for the natural gas pipeline with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in December 2014 after completing a year of environmental and cultural surveys.

Panda Power Funds has two Marcellus gas-fueled power plants currently under construction in Bradford and Lycoming counties. The 829-MW Liberty power plant is expected to begin commercial operations in early 2016. The 829-MW Patriot power plant is scheduled to begin operations in the second quarter of 2016. The company started operations at the 758-MW Panda Sherman plant in Texas in November 2014.
