GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH, NYSE: GE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS), in which GEH will promote the training and development of nuclear safety, and enhance the understanding of boiling water reactor technology. In September, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) certified the design of the Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR).
“This agreement will enhance the capability of VARANS staff to perform technical assessments and safety evaluations.” GEH Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer David Durham said. “Through this agreement and others we look forward to continuing to support the building of Vietnam’s nuclear power infrastructure.”
Vietnam plans to build more than 10,000-MW of nuclear generating capacity by 2030.
