DOE fines Fluor B&W Portsmouth $243,000 for nuclear safety violations

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) proposed $243,750 in civil penalties to Fluor B&W Portsmouth (FBP) for violations of DOE’s nuclear safety and radiation protection regulations.

The Preliminary Notice of Violation (PNOV) cites five violations of DOE’s regulations. DOE categorized them as one Severity Level I violation, three Severity Level II violations and one Severity Level III violation at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The violations are associated with the improper alteration of Radiation Protection documents and other violations at the plant that occurred in April 2013. The PNOV cites violations in the areas of information requirements, quality improvement, routine testing for operability and work processes, records management and training.
