EPRI licenses resin for nuclear power plant internal water streams

EPRI licensing agreement with Purolite Corporation resin cobalt internal nuclear power plant water streams

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) entered into a license agreement with Purolite Corp. to manufacture a resin that removes radioactive elements from internal water streams of nuclear power plants.

The CoSeq resin increases the amount and efficiency of cobalt removal compared to conventional resins.  Daily wear of plant components can release cobalt and nickel into the plant’s internal recirculating water streams. The licensing agreement culminates a four-year effort to develop, demonstrate and commercialize the resin technology.

The resin will initially be available for boiling water reactors, but future development may expand its applicability to pressurized water reactors.
