Wylfa 1 nuclear life extension decision expected in September

Wylfa nuclear power plant to restart in a week

Britain’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is expected to decide next month on a life extension for the 490-MW Wylfa 1 nuclear plant.

The unit is scheduled to shut down September 30, but plant owner Magnox Limited filed to extend operations of the plant until December 2015. Magnox sent in a Periodic Safety Review at the end of 2013 in which it had to justify the prolonged use of the site, according to Yahoo UK.

Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy Ltd. in July was chosen to supply an advanced boiling water reactor for the new Wylfa unit that will replace Unit 1 after it is shut down. Wylfa 2 shut down in April 2012.
