The fully assembled reactor vessel was installed at the Watts Bar 2 nuclear project in Tennessee.
The vessel was installed over a three-week timespan, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press. Workers with the Tennessee Valley Authority and other contractors placed the core barrel Aug. 9 over a 12-hour period. Three days later, the upper assembly was put into place. The upper assembly houses the control rods. On Aug. 13, the reactor head, which weighs 298,700 pounds, was installed.
TVA workers will begin open systems testing on the reactor, a first in a series of project milestones. Watts Bar 2 is scheduled to begin operations in December 2015 and cost $4.2 billion.
