China hydropower provider enters nuclear power venture

China Three Gorges Corp. (CTGC) signed an agreement with China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC) to invest in nuclear power projects and to research and develop (R&D) new nuclear technologies.

CTGC, the country’s largest hydropower provider, will jointly invest in domestic nuclear projects, including the promotion of the Taohuajiang nuclear plant in central China’s Hunan Province, according to Xinhua news agency. The project is expected to cost 67 billion yuan ($10.9 billion) and has a planned capacity of 5 GW.

CTGC said in the article it hopes its entrance in the nuclear sector will help to supplement its hydropower-only business structure and improve its medium- and long-term earnings growth expectations.
