Saskatchewan Power (SaskPower) will permanently close a coal-fired power unit next week.
SaskPower will close the 61-MW Unit 2 at the Boundary Dam Power Station on Monday, according to the CBC. The utility said it will replace the capacity with an increase in gas-fired generation and through electricity sold to the province by Manitoba Hydro. Unit 1 shut down last year.
Boundary Dam Unit 3 was retrofitted with a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage system that cost around $1.35 billion. The system is designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90 percent.
