International team visits Clinton nuclear power plant

An international team of nuclear safety experts will visit the Clinton nuclear power plant in Illinois to review operational safety practices.

The 14-member voluntary peer review, known as the Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) visit, is led by the International Atomic Energy Agency and will be on the site from August 12 through 28. The team will include reviewers from Canada, Slovakia, Belgium, Mexico and other countries.

The OSART program is designed to assist member states in enhancing the operational safety of nuclear power plants and fostering continuous improvements through the dissemination of information on best practices. Areas to be covered include operational experience, training and qualifications, radiation protection, emergency planning and preparedness and maintenance.

Once the team completes the review, they will produce a report identifying best practices and suggest possible safety improvements. Plant operator Exelon (NYSE: EXC) and the U.S. government will receive the report.
