FPL completes 1,250 MW combined cycle, natural gas facility

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has completed its 1,250-MW Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Center.

The $1.3 billion facility features a combined cycle, natural gas unit, making it one of the cleanest, most energy-efficient plants in the nation, according to FPL.

Previously the site served as an oil burning plant but was dismantled in 2011.

The new facility generates power with half the rate of carbon dioxide emissions and more than 90 percent fewer air emissions, compared to the former plant. The energy center’s administration building also features rooftop solar panels, receiving U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

The plant entered commercial operation April 1, two months ahead of schedule.
