Nuclear power plant trips offline as it prepares for refueling outage

The 1,245-MW Seabrook nuclear power plant in New Hampshire tripped offline April 1 as workers were preparing the unit for a refueling outage. The plant is operated by NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE).

According to an event report filed with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the plant’s turbine had been taken offline in preparation for testing. An electrical issue caused a 345 kV bus to de-energize and power was lost to the reactor’s coolant pumps, which led to the shutdown of the unit. The cause of the initial electrical issue is under investigation. Backup systems performed as designed.
