Duke Energy coal ash pond pumping under investigation

The Waterkeeper Alliance, an environmental group, has released photos of Duke Energy workers pumping water from coal ash ponds into a Cape Fear River canal.

The Cape Fear Plant is closed but the ponds remain at the head of the river.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said its inspectors are investigating if this was an illegal release of untreated waste water, according to WNCN.

Duke Energy told the news station that its crews were legally performing routine maintenance to lower water levels.

On Feb. 2 coal ash basin water spilled into the Dan River after a pipe broke at the Dan River Steam Station. Duke Energy and DENR officials will be in court later this week in relation to the Dan River spill.
