325 MW of new capacity added in U.S. in January

The U.S. added 325-MW of power capacity last month, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Officers of Energy Projects Energy Infrastructure Update for January. That marks a decrease from 1,625-MW of capacity added in January 2013.

The largest drop in new capacity is from wind power projects. The U.S. installed four MW of wind power last month compared to 958 MW of wind power in January 2013. The U.S. also installed 342 MW of natural gas-fired capacity in January 2013, while no new fossil fuel-fired generation was added last month.

Solar power capacity did increase in the comparison, with 287 MW installed last month and 256 MW installed in January 2013.
