The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) released updated response guidelines for nuclear power plant operators during an earthquake.
The guidelines define procedures for near-term actions to determine the earthquakeâs effects, including the assessment of seismic recordings at the plant site and focused inspections to determine if key systems and components have sustained significant damage or if operating systems are impaired. They also define plant restart readiness actions.
The guidelines apply to situations of little damage to plant equipment and structures up to significant damage and will help determine if the plant should be shut down for in-depth evaluations or can continue or resume operations.
The response plan is divided into five activities and four damage levels, three earthquake levels and six action levels that can be performed based on the damage and earthquake levels.
