The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) installed a condenser at the UAE’s first nuclear power plant.
The condenser will cool the steam back into water at the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi. The condenser sections were manufactured in South Korea and shipped to Barakah Unit 1. Fabrication and installation of the containment liner plate were also completed at the unit’s reactor containment building.
Unit 1 is expected to begin operations in 2017. Construction on Unit 2 is underway and commercial operation is set for 2018. ENEC will apply for operating licenses for both units in 2015. ENEC said it is on track to break ground on a third unit in 2014, subject to regulatory approvals.
