Consumers Energy picks AMEC to decommission coal-fired power plants

Consumers Energy delay retiring coal-fired power units Michigan Cobb J.R. Whiting Karn-Weadock

Consumers Energy selected AMEC to decommission seven units at the company’s three oldest coal-fired power plants in Michigan.

The units are located at the Karn/Weadock plant, J.R. Whiting and B.C. Cobb power plants. The seven units have a total generating capacity of 950 MW and will be retired by April 2016. Consumers announced plans to buy the 540 MW DPC Juniper natural gas-fired power plant in Jackson, Mich. for $155 million in order to help offset the retirements. Construction was scheduled to begin this year and end in 2017.

The power plants have an average operating lifespan of more than 60 years.
