NRC cites nuclear power plant over reactor shutdown

Exelon ends plans to uprate LaSalle nuclear Limerick nuclear plants Illinois Pennsylvania Wall Street Journal

Exelon (NYSE: EXC) was cited by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for failing to follow procedure which led to the shutdown of Unit 2 at the LaSalle nuclear power plant in Illinois. NRC classified the incident as “white,” or having low to moderate safety significance.

During a September 2013 inspection at the plant, NRC inspectors found that plant staff did not perform certain procedural steps in accordance with existing procedures. That led to approximately one foot of circulating water to flow into a small area in the turbine building, triggering intake pumps to shut off and a loss of normal heat removal, resulting in Unit 2 shutting down.

NRC will conduct another inspection to review corrective actions.
